Software Developer - Reservoir Simulation, Calgary

This is a full-time, permanent position

Position Summary:

CMG is seeking a Software Developer - Reservoir Simulation to join our CoFlow project. CoFlow combines reservoir and production engineering simulation technologies to improve the overall productivity of engineering workflows for large integrated assets, allowing oil companies to better understand and develop petroleum resources with a unified approach.

Job Description:

Working as part of the CoFlow team, under the direction of the Flow Simulation Lead, the successful candidate will be involved in many aspects of the development of a dynamic reservoir modelling system that incorporates reservoir simulation with surface network and geomechanical modeling and simulation. This includes primarily designing and implementing data structures and algorithms for reservoir simulation, and supporting the compute framework used for all aspects of the project’s high-performance numerical calculations. As part of the project team, the successful candidate will be involved in the design, coding, and testing of the system and is expected to be a team player, with excellent communication skills.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Understanding of the physics and equations of complex fluid flow.
  • Experience with High Performance Computing (HPC) and Scientific Computing.
  • Knowledge of Linear Algebra, Differential Equations and Partial Differential Equations.
  • Knowledge of Finite-Difference and Finite-Element discretization techniques.
  • Experience with developing non-linear and linear solver algorithms.
  • Experience with HPC programming models: Vectorization (SIMD), Multithreaded computing (SMP/OpenMP), Distributed computing (MPI), Accelerators (OpenCL /CUDA), Non-Uniform Memory Access (NUMA).
  • Knowledge of partitioning and domain decomposition algorithms.
  • Experience the with C++ and/or C# programming languages.


  • A PhD or MSc degree in Engineering, Applied Mathematics or Computing Science.
