Course Description

March 15, 2023 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM CDT (GMT-5)

Carbon storage has become a critical component of the energy industry and understanding geomechanical effects is essential for mitigating risk. This course gives an overview of geomechanics modelling with a particular focus on ccs. Basic geomechanics concepts will be reviewed as well as how to implement them using CMG software. Practical CCS examples will investigated including using geomechanics to determine cap rock integrity and potential fault reactivation

Course Content

  • Review basic mechanical concepts and equations
  • Coupling geomechanics to a flow simulator
  • Finite elements
  • Boundary and initial conditions
  • Yield functions
  • Constitutive laws
  • Dual grid system
  • Barton-Bandis fracture permeability
  • Caprock leakage
  • Fault reactivation

Vikram, a Senior Reservoir Simulation Engineer, has over 10 years of industry experience with a particular focus on the modelling of chemical flood processes. Vikram's expertise encompasses low salinity waterflooding, reservoir geochemistry, microemulsions, chemical flooding, C02 sequestration and thermal recovery processes. He holds a Master of Science, Petroleum Engineering from the University of Texas, Austin and a Bachelor of Technology, Chemical Engineering from Anna University in India.
