Research Analyst, M&A

Computer Modelling Group (CMG) is a global leader in advanced reservoir simulation software and services for the energy industry. As a publicly traded company growing through acquisitions, CMG is seeking a high-caliber Research Analyst to conduct industry, company and product research and landscaping.  The research analyst will explore various verticals and companies and assist in prioritizing business development.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will work as part of the Corporate Strategy & Partnerships team, under the direction of the VP of Strategy as well as with other members of the CMG leadership to assess inorganic initiatives.

General Research:

  • Landscape various vertical markets to identify acquisition targets, leveraging databases, industry reports and other research tools.
  • Conduct product and market research to assist the M&A team.
  • Conduct deep dive research on specific companies and products to assist the M&A team.
  • Share learnings with the broader Strategy and M&A teams.

Investment Research Expertise:

  • Demonstrate expertise in organizing, conducting and articulating research work that effectively communicates to stakeholders.
  • Craft compelling narratives outlining the strategic rationale, risks, and opportunities associated with proposed verticals, sub-domains and companies.
  • Collaborate with internal and external parties to gather pertinent information for the creation of investment memos.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Finance, Accounting, Economics or a related field.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct high quality research on companies and products.
  • Financial modeling, valuation, and due diligence skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work semi-autonomously and explore deeply on one’s own.
  • Quick learner; able to research and understand new industries and economic models as required.

Experience

  • 2 years of experience in Investment Banking, Private Equity, Buyside M&A or other research-oriented roles
  • Demonstratable experience conducting research for investment, M&A or product evaluation workflows
  • Experience with M&A or investments is an asset
  • Experience in software or energy and manufacturing verticals is an asset

Special Requirements

  • Must be able to travel internationally and hold a valid passport.
  • Willingness and comfort in working in a demanding environment with modest oversight.
