Business Development Specialist

Computer Modelling Group (CMG) is a global leader in advanced reservoir simulation software and services for the energy industry. As a publicly traded company accelerating growth through strategic acquisitions, CMG is seeking a high-caliber Business Development Specialist to originate potential M&A opportunities, develop a strong rapport with business leaders and build CMG’s brand through industry events and conferences.

 

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will work as part of the Corporate Development team, under the direction of the Head of Corporate Development as well as with other members of the CMG leadership to assess and execute on different inorganic initiatives.

Business Development:

  • Research industries and markets to identify acquisition targets, leveraging databases, industry reports, and outbound outreach.
  • Build and maintain a robust pipeline of qualified M&A opportunities, using CRM and market intelligence tools.
  • Develop strong relationships with business owners, executives, investors, and advisors to expand our deal flow network.
  • Initiate conversations with prospective companies, communicate our value proposition, and assess initial strategic fit.
  • Work closely with the corporate development team and senior leadership to qualify leads and prioritize opportunities.
  • Represent the company at industry events and conferences to increase visibility and sourcing reach.

 

Technical M&A Work:

  • Conduct in-depth financial analysis, due diligence, and valuation assessments for potential acquisitions.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to evaluate the technical feasibility and integration requirements of potential acquisitions.

 

Investment Memo Expertise:

  • Demonstrate expertise in building and articulating investment memos that effectively communicate complex financial and technical information to stakeholders.
  • Craft compelling narratives outlining the strategic rationale, risks, and opportunities associated with proposed transactions.
  • Collaborate with internal and external parties to gather pertinent information for the creation of investment memos.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Finance, Accounting, Economics or a related field.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong business development skills.
  • Strong financial modeling, valuation, and due diligence skills.
  • Building powerful presentations.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
  • Quick learner; able to research and understand new industries and economic models as required.

Experience

  • 3-5 years of experience in Corporate Development, Investment Banking, Private Equity, Buyside M&A, or Investor Relations.
  • Experience in different components of the M&A workflow.
  • Experience with M&A in software or energy vertical is an asset.
  • Experience with international/global organization preferred.

Special Requirements

  • Must be able to travel internationally and hold a valid passport.
  • Willingness to work in a deadline driven environment to ensure negotiations continue as required.

Location

Calgary or Houston or Western Europe. Remote candidates will be considered, but a strong preference for local candidates where CMG has offices.
