Black Oil & Unconventional Simulator

IMEX™ is the leading black oil reservoir simulator for modelling primary, secondary, and tertiary oil recovery processes.

"IMEX delivers reliable, precise simulation – backed by CMG’s exceptional support"
Akihiro Takahashi

Quickly screen prospects, set up pilot designs, monitor and optimize field operations, and improve production performance.

Conventional Black Oil Reservoirs

Reservoir Modelling for Reliable Forecasts with AI

Model simple to structurally complex, heterogeneous, faulted, and fractured oil and gas reservoirs, using small to very large scale multi-million grid cell models to achieve reliable production forecasts. Use an Adaptive-Implicit formulation along with integrated artificial intelligence to minimize run times without sacrificing data integrity.

Artificial Intelligence for Reservoir Modelling
Drill pipe for oil and gas wellbore flow
Unconventional Reservoirs

Accurate Production Forecasting

Model naturally and/or hydraulically fractured reservoirs to accurately capture transient flow behaviour and to achieve more accurate and better production forecasts.

Segmented Wells

Intelligent Wellbore Flow and Pressure Modeling

Model the flow and pressure change throughout the wellbore branches, tubing strings, and equipment with an intelligent segmented wells module.

Secondary & Tertiary Oil Recovery

Field Development Optimization for Complex Reservoirs

Evaluate and optimize field development plans and predict recovery for primary and secondary recovery methods in complex and heterogeneous reservoirs. IMEX allows for fast analysis of complex recovery mechanisms using a simplified black oil approach before moving to GEM or STARS for more detailed analysis. These processes include, but are not limited to, Low Salinity Waterflood; Polymer; Surfactant; Miscible gas injection.

Frequently Asked Questions

IMEX refers to IMplicit–EXplicit Reservoir Simulator. It combines implicit and explicit solution methods to efficiently model multiphase flow in reservoirs using black-oil correlations. It supports studies such as primary depletion, waterflooding, gas injection, polymer flooding, and unconventional reservoir simulations.

IMEX supports black-oil based fluid models, including oil–water and gas–water systems, for reservoirs such as dry gas and gas condensates. It can model processes such as gas injection, polymer flooding, tracer studies, and seawater injection, as well as selected unconventional features like gas desorption.

A basic IMEX model requires a reservoir description (grid, porosity, and permeability), a fluid model (PVT data), and rock–fluid properties such as relative permeability. Users should also define initial conditions (pressure and saturations) and well data, including well locations and operating constraints.

IMEX is natively coupled with CMG’s Geomechanics Module, providing direct one-way and two-way coupling between fluid flow and geomechanics. Through this coupling, changes in pressure and temperature dynamically update reservoir and caprock properties such as porosity and permeability based on evolving stress states.

IMEX includes a thermal option that solves the energy conservation equation to account for temperature effects, such as changes in fluid viscosity and rock properties, during cold or hot water injection. Thermal recovery processes involving steam or combustion are handled by STARS.

IMEX is typically used when a black-oil PVT description is sufficient, such as for primary depletion or waterflooding studies. GEM is designed for compositional modeling using an equation of state, while STARS is intended for thermal and advanced recovery processes such as steam-based methods or in-situ combustion.

Yes. IMEX supports GPU acceleration through the IMEX-GPU solver. It runs in Linux environments with CUDA-enabled NVIDIA GPUs and does not require a separate license beyond a standard IMEX license. Current GPU execution uses a single GPU per run, while multi-GPU support is under development.
