Carbon Capture Underground Storage with Geomechanics

GEM Logo
Course Overview and Content

Learn the fundamentals of Geomechanics and how it is applicable to Carbon Storage.

Discuss key geomechanical topics including complex finite element strain/stress approaches.  Discuss in detail geomechanical risks prevalent in CCS operations including cap rock integrity, fault reactivation and surface heave.   Several example cases will showcase how to model these risks and their impact on CCS operations.

The information and techniques provided in this course will enable engineers to build a complex reservoir simulation dataset and analyze simulation run results using geomechanical features in GEM.

Course Content:

  • GEM geomechanical features including coupling
  • Concepts of Complex stress-strain relationships, yielding criteria, linear elasticity, non-linear elasticity, constitutive models
  • Cap Rock Integrity
  • Fault Reactivation
  • Modified Cam Clay (MCC) Model
