This course is designed for government regulatory bodies. Simulation has become a critical part of the CO2 injection permit application process and understanding the capabilities of simulation and how it can be used to predict potential risks is vital for regulators.
This course will review the basics of CCS modelling including structural trapping, hysteresis, solubility, and mineralization. The course will also emphasize understanding potential risks related to CO2 injection such as cap rock integrity, fault-reactivation, near wellbore salt precipitation and ground water contamination.
Current simulation requirements for permit applications will be reviewed as well as other risks that are currently not required but should be investigated by the applicant. Example completed simulation models and reports will be examined including how to correctly interpret the results.
